Attending WELMUN was an exhilarating experience that I’ll cherish for years to come. Over the course of three days, I had the opportunity to represent Germany in the United Nations Historical Security Council (UNHSC), tackling the complex and often contentious agenda of the Arab-Israel conflict. This event was a whirlwind of intense debates, diplomatic strategies, and unforgettable moments, all set against the backdrop of a diverse and competitive group of students from across India.
From the moment I arrived, the atmosphere was electric. Students buzzed with excitement, exchanging ideas and preparing their speeches. As a double delegation, my partner and I worked closely to ensure our positions were aligned and our strategies were solid. Our research on Germany’s historical stance and its potential solutions for the Arab-Israel conflict gave us a solid foundation. We dove deep into Germany’s post-World War II foreign policy and its commitment to peace in the Middle East, which shaped our approach during the debates.
The first day kicked off with a formal opening session, where delegates introduced themselves and their countries’ positions. The sense of camaraderie and competition was palpable. As discussions heated up, it became clear that many delegates were incredibly passionate and well-prepared. I was both nervous and excited, knowing that I had to stand out amidst such a talented group.
As the debates progressed, I found my confidence growing. The format allowed us to engage in spirited discussions, and I learned how to articulate Germany’s views effectively while also addressing the concerns of other nations. The competitive spirit fueled our determination; every speech was met with challenging questions and counterarguments. It was a true test of diplomacy, and I relished every moment.
One of the highlights of the event was the cultural performances interspersed throughout the sessions. From traditional dances to musical acts, these performances provided a delightful break from the intense discussions. They showcased the rich diversity of our participating nations and fostered a sense of unity among us. It was inspiring to see everyone come together to celebrate culture while representing their countries with pride.
As the final day approached, the stakes became higher. Resolutions were drafted, alliances were formed, and negotiations intensified. I felt a mix of adrenaline and determination, striving to advocate for Germany’s position while remaining open to collaboration. The experience taught me the importance of listening and finding common ground—a vital skill in any negotiation.
In the end, our hard work paid off. Not only did I receive recognition for my contributions, but I also made lasting friendships with fellow delegates. The bonds we formed over shared challenges and laughter are invaluable. WELMUN wasn’t just about the debates; it was about connecting with like-minded peers who share a passion for global issues.
Reflecting on my time at WELMUN, I am grateful for the opportunity to engage deeply with the Arab-Israel conflict and to develop my skills in diplomacy. The experience was both fun and educational, leaving me inspired to continue exploring international relations. I can’t wait for future conferences where I can apply what I learned and meet even more passionate individuals from around the world. WELMUN truly was an unforgettable journey!
